Primary Services
  • Google AdWords: Interface could be better, clicks are expensive, no daypart control, budgeting is less than ideal, but reporting is excellent. Ad specs are 25/35/35/URL. Because of lawsuits, Google is more restrictive of trademarks in ads than other PPC services. Ad submission tracking does not exist and copy approval can take as much as two weeks. Partners include AOL, Netscape, Earthlink, CompuServ, Shopping.com, AT&T Worldnet, About.com, Lycos.com, The New York Times, Infospace, Ask.com, Reed Business, How Stuff Works, Business.com, Food Network, hgtv.com
  • Yahoo Search Marketing: Formerly Overture. Obscure interface, slow ad approval processs, poor exception handling, less than ideal campaign management and report generation, no campaign termination date function. Ad submission tracking superior to Google. Ad specs are 40/70/120/URL. Yahoo drops the second descriptive line, but many partner sites display it. Partners include Alta Vista, Excite, Ivillage.com, Sympatico.ca, Juno, Netzero, Mixcat, Searchbug, Dogpile, Metacrawler.com, Webcrawler.com, Alltheweb.com, Infospace, CNN, ESPN, Wall Street Journal, Knight Ridder, City Search.
  • MSN Advertising: new kid on the PPC block and currently a bargain. Excellent interface, includes concept of dayparts, which other services don't offer. Ad specs are 40/70/URL. Some hiccups, but these are being resolved over time. MSN does not currently have a partner network.
Secondary Services
  • Ask Sponsored Listings: Obscure interface, no phone support or customer service of any kind, poor process feedback, as expensive as Google, low click delivery. Ad specs are 40/70/URL. Partners include Iwon.com, Ticketmaster, Infospace, The Motley Fool, Citysearch.com, Mamma.com, Clear Channel, Mysearch.com, Evite, C|net, Dogpile, Excite, MyWay.com. Strongly recommended against.

  • Looksmart Network: Partner network duplicates other services. Partners include: Infospace, Search.com, Mamma.com, Snap.com, InfoRocket, Excite, MetaCrawler, WebCrawler, Lycos. Not recommended.
  • Web Crawler: Partner network duplicates other services. Partners include Dogpile, Verizon, NBCi, MetaCrawler. Not recommended.
