The tunnel is part of the Strindheim tunnel on the E6 express way in Trondheim and is widely regarded as one of the most complicated and demanding civil engineering projects in Norway.

The project involved the construction of a concrete tunnel through quick clay, in a city district that features protected buildings and intensive through traffic in the form of motorists, pedestrians and cyclists.

First in the world

The project was the first in the world to deploy bored piles, used as wall piles in the construction pit, providing the tunnel with extra protection against water penetration in the interfaces between clay and rock.

The collaboration between the Norwegian Public Roads Administration, the Directorate of Public Roads and NCC has been highly successful and played an entirely decisive role in the project being so well executed. Several of NCC's experts from this project have gone on to work with the Hålogaland bridge, which will be Norway's second longest suspension bridge.

Previous awards

The Civil Engineering Project of the Year 2014 award is one of the most important prizes bestowed on NCC in Norway. In 2013, NCC Property Development and NCC Construction were both nominated in Building of the Year 2013 category. In the same year, NCC Construction won the Innovation of the Year award for it's SS Terje Snow-melting facility.

The prize is awarded by the trade journal Byggindustrien.
