NCC to expand Borgunda waterworks in Skaraborg, Sweden

NCC and the municipal water association Skaraborgsvatten are to partner to expand Borgunda waterworks, adding a new treatment stage. Production has commenced and the project is scheduled for completion in summer 2027. The project has an order value of approximately SEK 150 million.

“We have a long-standing collaboration with NCC and there is also a framework agreement in place covering other water and sewage assignments in addition to this project. This collaboration enables us to leverage NCC’s know-how across the construction process, including specialist water and sewage expertise, which is crucial as we now look to further improve the quality of the water to our customers,” says Carl Doverholm, President of Skaraborgsvatten.

Skaraborgsvatten is a municipal association supplying around 100,000 inhabitants in the three municipalities of Skövde, Skara and Falköping with drinking water from Lake Vättern. Now NCC will expand the waterwork with an additional treatment step – an ultrafilter – is being introduced, thereby guaranteeing a significant improvement of the efficacy of the microbiological barrier.

“Because the project is being conducted in partnering form, we can benefit from each other’s different experiences to maintain exceptional quality and ensure safe operation throughout the project implementation phase,” says Tobias Häggholm, Business Manager at NCC Infrastructure.

NCC has lengthy experience in the construction and refurbishment of water infrastructure. NCC is the only construction company with its own specialized water treatment know-how, and all of the expertise across the production chain from concept to commissioning. The expansion of Borgunda waterworks will take place while the plant continues to operate, imposing high demands on NCC’s planning, logistics and technical expertise.

Work has recently commenced and will be completed in 2027. The order will be registered in the NCC Infrastructure business area in the second quarter of 2025 and the order value is approximately SEK 150 million.
