NCC to carry out extensive roadworks on E4 expressway in Umeå, Sweden

NCC has been commissioned by the Swedish Transport Administration to carry out extensive upgrading works on the E4 expressway between Hörnefors and Stöcksjö, south of Umeå. The order value is approximately SEK 300 million.

NCC’s assignment includes a complete upgrade of one of northern Sweden’s busiest routes to raise the standard and service life of the road. As part of the project, NCC will reinforce the road foundation, lay a new asphalt course, improve water drainage solutions and perform work on the underlying base layers.

In total, approximately 100,000 tons of asphalt will be milled, of which a significant portion – more than 50,000 tons – will be recycled and used in other paving work on nine secondary roads around Västerbotten that connect to the E4 expressway. This approach to reuse of materials will reduce the climate footprint while ensuring efficient use of resources.

“In this project, we will be reinforcing a very important section of road in Umeå. Through extensive reuse of asphalt and modern reconstruction methods, we can utilize important resources and ensure a stable road for many years to come,” says Grete Aspelund, Head of NCC Industry.

The contract is valued at approximately SEK 300 million and will be registered among orders in the NCC Industry business area in the first quarter of 2026. Work will commence in summer 2026 and the project is scheduled for completion in autumn 2027.
