NCC to construct 144 new prison places in Mariestad

On behalf of Specialfastigheter, NCC will conduct the initial works for construction of new prison places at the Rödjan prison in Mariestad. The assignment will take place under the parties’ strategic partnering agreement, and planning and design will commence immediately. The potential order value of the contract is approximately SEK 900 million.

“We are extending our partnership with Specialfastigheter and bringing our broad experience of the complex environments and critical social infrastructure required by the prison system. By working in the same team on all nearby prisons, we can coordinate resources and draw on our experience, which will be more cost-efficient, enable faster project start-ups and help to create more purpose-built premises,” says Henrik Landelius, Head of NCC Building Sweden.

The new prison places are part of the Prison and Probation Service’s investment to meet the need for more places and will be built next to the existing prison, Rödjan, in Mariestad, which is an open Security Class 3 prison. The 144 new places will be Security Class 2, meaning they will be closed places. The project will include three 48-place buildings, an entrance building and workshops, as well as technical buildings and infrastructure.

The project will be carried out in partnering form between NCC and Specialfastigheter under the strategic framework agreement signed by the parties in 2019. The investigation phase commenced in October 2021, and the next phase with planning, design and initial earthworks is now under way.

NCC and Specialfastigheter are already refurbishing and extending the Rödjan and Tidaholm prisons to make the premises more efficient by increasing capacity. The facilities will also become more energy-efficient and cost-effective. All projects under the framework agreement will continue throughout the 2020s. Upon completion, approximately 450 new prison places will have been created.

The total order value of the contract is approximately SEK 900 million and the order will be registered in NCC Building Sweden on an ongoing basis.
