NCC to build underground rainwater basin in Denmark

NCC has been commissioned by Glostrup Forsyning and Glostrup Municipality to build an underground rainwater basin west of Copenhagen. The project is being carried out to protect the city from future flooding and to contribute to a more resilient and climate-adapted infrastructure. The order value amounts to just over SEK 160 million.

At the same time as NCC is building the underground basin for Glostrup Forsyning, connecting roads for Glostrup Municipality are being upgraded at the same time. The integrated approach combines climate adaptation and urban development, which makes sense both from an economic perspective and for the end result.

"We are proud to be able to contribute to the realization of a project that not only protects the city from flooding, but also takes a holistic approach to urban development. We look forward to working closely with both Glostrup Municipality and Glostrup Forsyning," says Bjarki Finnbogason, Section Manager, NCC Infrastructure.

The future pool will have a capacity of almost 8,000 cubic metres – more than seven times the size of the large pool in Glostrup swimming facility, which is located right next to the construction site.

NCC's work will begin with excavation, where the basin will be built using large tunnel elements of fiberglass-reinforced polyester, so-called GAP elements. In addition, a pumping station will be built, and new inlet and outlet pipes will be installed.

For Glostrup Forsyning, the rainwater basin is an important part of a broader, long-term climate adaptation strategy.

"With this basin, we are taking a big step towards protecting Glostrup from the heavier rains we are already experiencing – and which we expect to see more of in the future. It is an investment in future infrastructure and for a more resilient city," says Søren Enemark, Chairman of the Board at Glostrup Forsyning.

The rainwater basin is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2026, while the road upgrades are expected to be completed in spring 2027.

The order value is approximately SEK 160 million and will be registered in the NCC Infrastructure business area in the third quarter of 2025.
