Product Development, Innovation, and Resource Efficiency
We need to continuously adapt and develop our working methods, products, and solutions to meet new needs and requirements from customers, authorities, and legislation. It’s not just about staying at the forefront of technology and innovation – it’s about building a future that everyone can be proud of.
In product development and innovation, we focus on two primary areas where we know we can make a difference. One is circular material flows and recycled products. The other is resource efficiency and energy sources.
How we work with circular material flows
To reduce our environmental and climate impact, we strive to create circular material flows where waste from one project can become a resource in another. By sorting and/or crushing excavated material, concrete, asphalt, and other building materials from demolition and construction projects, we can reuse or recycle the materials to be used again in, for example, road construction, concrete production, and as fill material.
Our recycled products
We actively work to develop recycled products that can replace primary/virgin products such as rock, gravel, and sand. Today, we offer recycled asphalt, soils, moraine, and crushed concrete for various projects where our secondary products have proven to have just as good, and sometimes even better, properties than the primary products.
Resource efficiency and energy sources
Our goal is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions throughout the entire value chain, increase energy efficiency, and phase out fossil energy sources. We do this by reviewing our processes, transportation, and production—and identifying the areas where we can make a difference.
Electrification of our production
To reduce fossil emissions, we are working purposefully to expand the electrification of our production facilities and machinery. A first step is the electrification of our crushing plants, which has resulted in significant energy efficiency improvements. The next step is the electrification of our construction machinery, such as wheel loaders.
In Norway, all our production facilities are electrified. We also have several ongoing projects working with emission-free machines, electrified transportation, and drilling rigs in all the Nordic countries.
Optimized Transport and Renewable Fuel
By optimizing our logistics chains and avoiding idling, we have managed to reduce the total emissions from our operations. All wheel loader operators are trained in eco-driving. For transports that are still powered by diesel or gasoline, we are actively working to switch to fossil-free energy sources such as electricity or fossil-free fuels like HVO.
How we continue to drive development forward
By collaborating with other players in the industry, we continue to drive progress toward a more sustainable industry. We participate in several external research projects that focus on the following areas:
- Digitalized permitting processes for more efficient management.
- Development of new secondary aggregate products and circular material flows.
- Improved production efficiency and energy-efficient transport.
- Industry-wide tool for developing EPDs/environmental product declarations.
