NCC to refurbish National Archives in Helsinki
NCC has been commissioned by Senatfastigheter to completely refurbish and remodel the main building of the National Archives of Finland in Helsinki. The project is being carried out in partnering form with the Finnish Heritage Agency. The order value is approximately SEK 480 million.
First completed in 1890, the main building of the National Archives of Finland was then extended in 1928 and 1972. The building will now be completely refurbished and adapted to align with current and future needs of the National Archives, the Finnish National Agency for Education and the Research Council of Finland.
The project comprises an area of approximately 18,500 square meters and refurbishment will include replacing technical installations, facades, roofs and courtyards. Interiors of the buildings that have historical value will also undergo conservation measures. The project has been preceded by a development phase in which the parameters of the project were jointly established by the parties.
“Partnering is the right approach when refurbishing a national building subject to cultural heritage protection. NCC is very experienced in partnering projects of this type, which is crucial for ensuring a successful outcome,” says Catarina Molén-Runnäs, Head of NCC Building Nordics.
The refurbishment is being conducted in close cooperation with the Finnish Heritage Agency, applying the principles of sensitive restoration. As part of the project, particular attention will be devoted to the cultural and historical values of the building and the goal of realizing the project with a low carbon footprint and a strong focus on circular economy initiatives.
Work will commence in spring 2026 and the project is scheduled for completion in late 2028.
The assignment has an order value of about SEK 480 million and will be registered in the NCC Building Nordics business area in the second quarter of 2026.
