“For about the past three years, we have worked together in a partnership to complete detailed project planning for the Skandia Gateway project and are now ready for the next phase. All of the knowledge we have accumulated together with NCC is reassuring, and we are both expectant and excited to enter the construction phase. Skandia Harbour will be prepped in order to accommodate larger vessels. The Port of Gothenburg is responsible for one part of the project, which has been assigned to NCC, while the other part is being managed by the Swedish Maritime Administration. The later sub-project will involve dredging and deepening the channel and has been awaiting a decision on state support from the EU Commission for some time. The decision has now been taken, which is why the production phase can now begin.

NCC’s assignment includes the remodeling of the Skandia Harbour’s quay with new front sheet piling, extensive piling works, the installation of a new crane girder and new electricity, water and rainwater systems. Several stages are technically challenging, such as underwater casting and advanced foundation work in the existing port area. The port will continue to operate, which requires close dialogue with other organizations to avoid disruption to transportation, loading and unloading.

“The development of Skandia Harbour is a central infrastructure initiative that will benefit the entire Nordic region, and NCC’s broad expertise and experience will play a crucial role in this effort. This is a complex project, but by involving NCC early on, in the planning phase, we were able to solve many challenges and created good conditions for an effective process,” says Kenneth Nilsson, Head of NCC Infrastructure.

Planning and design of the project began in 2020.Construction will commence immediately and is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2028.

The total order value is just over SEK 1 billion, corresponding to approximately SEK 720 M in 2017 cost levels, and will be registered among orders in the fourth quarter of 2023 in the NCC Infrastructure business area.
