The right attitude and behavior are key to a safe construction site

For the thirteenth consecutive year, Awareness Day is being organized tomorrow at all of NCC’s workplaces across the Nordic region to focus on health and safety. This year’s theme is safety culture, which plays a key role in preventing accidents in the workplace.

On the first Wednesday in September, all of NCC’s 12,500 employees across the Nordic region will stop working to take part in the Group’s annual Awareness Day. The aim is to raise safety awareness and strengthen the safety culture, which will help to achieve NCC’s long-term target to reduce accidents in general, and eliminate serious accidents and incidents.

This year’s theme is safety culture. By engaging employees in a dialogue about how attitudes, values and behaviors affect the way work is carried out, the attitudes and actions that contribute to the company’s culture of safety can be reinforced.

“The culture is not static. It changes as behaviors and attitudes change, and as employees join and leave our projects. It is important, therefore, that we are always focused on behaviors and are aware of the role they play in achieving a strong safety culture,” says Lars-Gunnar Larsson, Head of Health and Safety at NCC.

The number of serious accidents, incidents and near misses at NCC’s construction sites has fallen by 47 percent since 2019. Systematic data collection and a high level of employee commitment have led to a continuous improvement in statistics and knowledge, and enabled targeted measures.

“We are making progress with our safety strategy but to achieve our targets, this process needs to be constantly improved and include everyone at the worksite, including subcontractors and other visitors. At this year’s Awareness Day we will be focusing on the attitudes, behaviors and values that we know have a major impact on our accident rate,” says Lars-Gunnar Larsson.

NCC held its first Awareness Day in 2011 and means that all of the Group’s employees stop working at 9:00 a.m. on the first Wednesday of September to focus on safety.
