NCC is part of a consortium working to realize long-term sustainable transports by developing electrified roads. Our solution is based on conductive technology where vehicles are powered and recharged using an electric rail in the roadway. The project eRoadArlanda is part of the Swedish Transport Administration's pre-commercial procurement of innovation where we develop and test the technology.
The use of fossil fuels must be reduced, and quickly. By building electrified roads, like eRoadArlanda, we can reduce carbon dioxide emissions by up to 80–90 percent. And we can do it by adding new technology to the existing infrastructure. Electricity is also a cleaner, quieter and less expensive source of energy than traditional fuels like petrol or diesel.
Development and operation of electrified roads on a national level can also contribute to new innovative products, knowledge and services. Sweden can take a leading position and show the way to a global reduction of harmful emissions.
In the project eRoadArlanda we work to realize future electrified roads. Our solution is based on conductive technology with a rail mounted in to the road. Conductive feeding from below works for all types of transports, both cars and larger vehicles such as buses and trucks. Energy is transferred from the rail in the road to the vehicle using a movable arm. As long as the vehicle is above the rails, the contact is in the down position. When overtaking another vehicle it's automatically lifted up.
As a part of part of the Swedish Transport Administration's pre-commercial procurement of innovation, the purpose of the project is to build and test a 2 km long electrified road located between Arlanda cargo terminal and Rosersbergs logistics center. eRoadArlanda is operated by a consortium with the following members: NCC, Elways, Kilenkrysset, PostNord, ABT Bolagen, Airport City Stockholm, Swedavia, Municipality of Sigtuna, Arlandastad Holding, e-Traction, WSP, VTI, KTH, Bilprovningen and Vattenfall.
